Hunter Worsham Fights in the Cage and Defends His Country
. |
April 14, 2010
.
...When most MMA fighters
prepare for fights, their focus is on their opposition, their conditioning, and
how they plan to use their abilities to come out with a victory.
. ... For Hunter
Worsham, there is a lot more on his plate than winning his fight against Zach
Underwood on this weekend’s Strikeforce card. Worsham is fighting in one of the
biggest Strikeforce cards to date on April 17, but as a member of the United
States Army’s 101st Airborne, he will most likely be deployed shortly after his
upcoming fight.
. ...Worsham is a father and a husband, on top of being a
professional fighter and serving his country in the military. His father, Cal
Worsham, is an ex-MMA fighter as well, and he is good friends with UFC legend,
Don Frye. Both Cal Worsham and Don Frye have decided to take Hunter’s corner in
his upcoming fight, his last before he serves this country overseas.
. ...“Cal has
been a friend of mine for a long time, and Hunter is serving our country in the
101st Airborne. I am privileged to be in his corner. I would do anything for
someone in the military,” said Frye. He not only offered to corner for Hunter,
but he is also paying for Hunter’s entire family, including his wife and infant
daughter, to fly to Nashville for the event. When Frye recognized that Worsham
needed sponsors for this fight, he called Brent Medley, President of Shark
Fights Promotions, to help with the process. Frye fought his last two fights
for the promotion and is currently the color commentator for Shark Fights ESPN
radio broadcast.
. ...“It really wasn’t a hard decision when you consider Hunter’s
compelling story.” stated Medley, regarding his decision to sponsor Hunter.
“It’s just such a unique story. Most troops would be trying to soak up as much
family time as possible. We applaud Hunter for his service to our country, and
forhis efforts and focus in regard to his fight career.” When asked if he was
surprised that Frye offered to corner Hunter and fly his family to the event,
Medley stated, “Hell no, I’m not surprised! I’ve had the privilege of getting to
know Don over the past year, and I’m not surprised at all. Don has a heart the
size of Texas.”
. ...Frye went to Medley regarding sponsorship opportunities for
Hunter because Medley runs a successful business. “Brent knows the fight
business and that is why Shark Fights is so successful. Having twice fought for
Shark Fights, and working as a commentator for them, I’ve seen firsthand
Brent’s concern and compassion for the fighters. He builds relationships
with people, and that is important. I really respect the fact that Shark Fights
is personally sponsoring Hunter. It will definitely help Hunter and his family.
Good people helping good people. That is what life should be all about.”
. ...Both
Frye and Medley have gone above and beyond to help Hunter’s family get to the
event. It shows the type of character these two men have, and how much they
truly respect Hunter and Cal Worsham.
. ...As a soldier in the army with deployment
looming, both Hunter and his father understand that this may be the last time
they get to see each other. “If the worst case scenario happens and he doesn’t
come back home alive, this will be the last time all of us see each other. Of
course, nobody wants to think about that, but it’s a reality,” said Cal
Worsham. “I knew when I signed up that I would eventually be deployed in my
military career. That just means a year away from my family in a very dangerous
place. You never know if you are coming back or what is going to happen. I’m
cherishing the last bit of time, but I’m also trying to leave my mark on the
MMA world before I leave,” said Worsham, when speaking about his decision to
join the army.
. ...It is a very difficult situation for anybody to go through and
it is especially difficult on Hunter’s parents. Despite Cal having served in
the military, he now realizes just how difficult this situation truly is for a
parent. According to Cal, “It is tougher than I thought. I think of myself as a
callous and rough guy, but I find that this is breaking me down, and I’m
starting to realize that I’m not as tough as I thought.”
. ...Cal doesn’t just think
of himself as a callous and rough guy. He is one. Cal is a UFC veteran, and if
this situation makes Cal feel that he is not as tough as he thought, then it
must be even more difficult than any outsider could ever imagine. As a child
Hunter was determined to follow in his fathers footsteps and he shared his
passion for wrestling and hunting. Cal would take his son hunting at the young
age of four and his MMA career sparked Hunters interest in fighting early on.
Hunter’s wrestling background had definitely contributed to his success in MMA.
Exceptional skills in wrestling and hunting are two qualities that Frye feels
will make Hunter a great soldier.
. ...“His fighting career and being in the Army
coincide perfectly. You can’t be successful at one and fail at the other. They
are just so perfectly matched. During most of his life, Hunter has been chasing
animals, spending days in the muck, heat, rain, and cold and it’s definitely a
test of his abilities. He has carried carcasses over his shoulders while still
carrying his weapon. He’s been doing everything that you would need to do in a
battle,” said Frye.
. ...It is impossible to question Hunter’s strength, due to his
willingness to join the Army in addition to being a professional fighter. It
shows what a great American he truly is. Since joining the army, Hunter has
been forced to alter his training routine in order to maintain the high level
of conditioning required to be successful as an MMA fighter.
. ...“I wear my mouth
piece when I run. I will do anything I can to make the training more MMA
oriented. When I get back to America, I know exactly what I am going to be
doing, so I might as well start training now,” said Hunter. Hunter went on to
say, “My family and I greatly appreciate everything that Don and Brent have
done in regard to this fight. Because of them, my entire family will be there
for my Strikeforce debut.”
. ...This is an extremely compelling story, but despite
all that is going on in Hunter’s life at this point in time, he remains focused
and understands that this fight is extremely important to his career. The
mental toughness shown by Hunter in this situation is extremely admirable. “If
Hunter puts on a really good performance Saturday night and gets the win, it
would generally get him a ticket back into Strikeforce. But in this case, his
service to this country will take center stage. It’s that service that enables
each of us to wear that freedom blanket that we sleep with every night. If he
gets the win, that’s great. But win or lose, he is still a hero in the eyes of
millions,” said Medley.
. ...Hunter understands the ramifications of this fight. He
knows how much it could change his career, and he does it all for his family,
which makes him even more vulnerable. “MMA is not just a sport to me, or
something I do to have fun, or because my dad did it. I do it because it is a
way of life. I have a wife and a daughter, and this is how I help support my
family and take care of my daughter. If I lose, I don’t get as much money, and that
takes food away from my family and clothing off of my daughter’s back,” said
Hunter.
. ...When the fight is over, regardless of whether Hunter Worsham is
victorious, everyone that knows his story will respect who he is as a person.
It takes an incredible amount of heart for someone who has the potential for
fame and fortune, as Hunter does with his MMA career, to give it up for the
time being to serve his country.
. ...“I very much appreciate the opportunity given
to me by Strikeforce and CBS. While I won’t be on the main card and seen on TV,
this is still a great opportunity. I want the world to know that I’m for real.
I am not one of these guys that just runs his mouth. I don’t bad mouth anybody.
I respect everyone as a person and as a human being, but my job is to go in and
beat people up," said Hunter. "That is what they are paying me to do
and that is exactly what I am going to do. I want them to know that I have
lived a good life as a dad, as a husband, as a son, and most importantly, as a
soldier. I’m basically just your average American.”
. ...But Hunter is so much more
than your average American. He is a hero, just as all who serve their country
are. This compelling and heartfelt story will not be complete anytime soon, but
as Hunter continues to go down the path of a soldier and a fighter, he will
gain the respect of everyone that he encounters.
. ...Don Frye said all anyone needs
to say when asked about his feelings on Hunter serving our country.

A Statement About Marcus Sursa
. |
March 20 , 2010
.
...Marcus
Sursa publicly made disparaging statements about our organization and the Shark
Fight 9 event. As such, we unfortunately find it necessary to respond to these
statements. Shark Fight Promotions would like to make it clear that Marcus
Sursa withdrew from the Shark Fight 9 card for medical reasons. Sursa
personally disclosed medical issues that would preclude him from fighting. He
also provided a letter from his physician to Shark Fights and to the Texas
Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR), stating the medical reasons why
he had to withdraw from the Shark Fight 9 event. As a result, Shark Fight
executives did what was required by TDLR regulations and released Sursa from
his contractual obligation to fight.”
. ...Shark Fight Promotions has always, and
will continue to, go above and beyond for our fighters. It is unfortunate that
Sursa is making inappropriate and inaccurate comments about our organization.
As such, Marcus Sursa has been permanently removed from the Shark Fight roster.
We wish him luck with his future endeavors.

. |
January 27, 2010
.
...In 2009 popular Texas fight promoter Shark Fight Promotions and ESPN 1440 radio secured their place in MMA history by airing the first live MMA broadcast in
the U.S. Shark Fight Promotions announced today that they have joined forces with
ESPN 1440 once again, this time to sign the legendary Don Frye to a ten
fight commentating deal. Frye,
one of the founding fathers of MMA, is not only a highly decorated champion; he

. ...According to Warren McCarty,

possibly the most unique individual I’ve ever met in the world of MMA. This man
has accomplished so much in a sport that defines the ultimate test of a man’s
skill, determination, and toughness. Don Frye’s in- depth knowledge of the
fight game is unsurpassed. His deep intimidating voice is well recognized, his
strong opinions are well respected, and fans relate to his comical outlook on

doubt that Don will quickly become known as one of the most entertaining and insightful
color commentators in the business. It’s an honor to have him as my broadcast
partner.”

on the team. I have no doubt that Don will be instrumental in taking Shark
Fight MMA broadcasts to the next level. You never know what he’s going to say,
but it’s always entertaining.”

contenders such as Don “The Predator” Frye, Trevor Prangley and Josh “The

Shark Fight Promotions Named Best Pro
Promotion of 2009
By Texas Fight News Magazine
. |
December 10, 2009
.
...Over
the last several years, numerous mixed martial arts (MMA) fight promotion
companies have made their debut in the great state of Texas. In 2009, Amarillo
based Shark Fight Promotions clearly dominated
the competition, earning them the title of “Best Pro Promotion of 2009”, in Texas Fight
News Magazine’s “Best of 2009” issue.
. ...Victoria Petrie, Founder and Editor of Texas Fight News Magazine, had this
to say, “Texas Fight News has proudly named Shark Fight Promotions, Best Pro
Promotion of 2009. Over the past year Shark Fights has taken MMA in Texas to an
entirely new level. When we decided to make the December issue of Texas
Fight News, “The Best of 2009”, Shark Fights immediately came to mind. They
were the clear choice for Best Pro Promotion."
. ...Petrie went on to say, “The Shark Fight outdoor event in
July drew record breaking attendance, attracting over 10,000 fight fans. I knew
then that Shark Fight Promotions was a force to be reckoned with. Two months
later the organization raised the bar yet again. Bas Rutten and Ron Kruck from HDNet’s Inside MMA were the
official commentators for the Shark Fight 6 internet pay-per-view. That same
night, Shark Fight’s and ESPN 1440 made
MMA history by airing the first ever live MMA radio broadcast in the U.S.
. ...According to Shark Fight President Brent Medley the
organization has big plans for 2010, “2009 was a stellar year for Shark Fights.
Receiving the title of Best Pro Promotion by Texas Fight News Magazine was the
icing on the cake. Our mission in 2010 is to bring Shark Fight events to more
cities throughout the state. So to all of the MMA fans in Texas, stay tuned, we
might be coming to your city in 2010!"
. ...There is no denying that Shark Fight Promotions firmly
stands by their commitment to deliver MMA events of the highest quality. Shark
Fight bout cards are strategically stacked with compelling match ups and high
profile fighters such as Don Frye and Trevor Prangley,
garnering the organization a great deal of visibility. They also receive a vast
amount of positive publicity through reputable media sources including, but not
limited to, ESPN 1440 Radio, Sherdog.com, MMAWEEKLY, and HDNet.
. ...Many notable celebrities within the fight industry are fans
of the organization and have attended Shark Fight events, such as TapouT crew
members Punkass and Skyscrape, WEC fighters Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, Leonard “Bad Boy”
Garcia, WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown, pro wrestling legend Terry Funk, and many others. For more information on Shark Fight Promotions, please
